Book desription: New York: Macmillan, 1899. First edition. Original Cloth. Very Good +. THIS BOOK IS ELIGIBLE FOR A DISCOUNT OF UP TO 20% OFF THE PRICE SHOWN IN THIS LISTING FOR ORDERS PLACED ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2009. (Not available in combination with any other discounts.) This is the rare FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION of the Norwegian-American professor's classic work and his first published, and most successful, book, in very good condition. Veblen's term "conspicuous consumption" has become a part of our everyday language and Veblen goods are defined by economists as those whose desirability decreases with their availability and price. In the publisher's original dark-green, vertical grain cloth, top edge gilt, with gilt lettering and bands to the spine. There is a bit of soiling to the front pastedown and ffep and the ffep bears a brief Christmas gift inscription dated 1890. There is a bit of wear to the front hinge and the rear hinge is broken. Extremities are lightly rubbed and there is a bit of light age spotting to the covers. The book is internally clean and scarce in this nice a condition.
