The first female mycologist to work at the United States Department of Agriculture, Flora Patterson (1847-1928) exhibited "the tenacity, audacity, and perspicacity of a true scientific visionary" (Reynolds, "Flora Patterson", Women in Microbiology, p. 219). This is the original printing, later reprinted by the University of Minnesota Press. Book has been well read and is in very good - condition with wear to the cover image along the edge and reading crease to front cover, corners bumped and shelf wear. It is a beautiful decorative antique print expertly colored and beautifully composed. This particular plate has been trimmed at the rough edge. Curtis' work was the first study of British flora, and artists contributing to the opus included James Sowerby, Sydenham Teak Edwards, Francis Sansom and William Kilburn. "The Botanical Magazine; or Flower-Garden Displayed, is an illustrated publication which began in 1787. The longest running botanical magazine, it is widely referred to by the subsequent name Curtis's Botanical Magazine. A few words underlined pp. 115-116. Some foxing. Eight pages have a dark mark in the center of the page, but the text is still legible. A damp stain on the lower corner of many pages. With additions and Supplementary notes by William Jardine. Edited with further illustrations, a biographical sketch of the author and a complete index by Edward Jesse.

The covers show rubbing which enhances the period appearance. Endpapers are marbled, gilt top edge, clean contents and a tight binding. This edition was part of the "Burt's Library of the World's Best Books" series and, unlike the typical A.L. Burt reprint, is bound in a high quality binding.

Reissue of this illustrated visitor's guide to the magisterial Age of Reptiles mural in the Great Hall of Yale's Peabody Museum, written by John Ostrom, one of the most important palaeontologists of the 20th century. Originally published in 1966 in the same pamphlet form. A beautiful copy in unusually nice condition. "The Age of Reptiles mural is an artistic masterpiece and was, for its time, perhaps the most scientifically accurate representation of the Mesozoic world ever created" (Black, "Creating the Age of Reptiles", Smithsonian Magazine, January 3, 2012).
