Description:
Anthony Blond, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 172 pages. The author's only novel; set in the Jim Crow American South. Gibson was one of several black American writers and artists in 1950s Paris along with Richard Wright and James Baldwin, and is the subject of Wright's last unpublished novel, Island of Hallucination, about this fractious period. Fear of legal action prevented that book's publication due to the book's portrayal of Gibson and an event called the 'Gibson Affair' that bitterly troubled Wright. Gibson has read the novel and thinks it should be published, according to a 2006 article in the Guardian because Wright created characters from a composite of real people rendering them unrecognizable. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a dust jacket with a few chips to the corners and edges, and light toning to spine. Offsetting to rear endpapers from jacket.
