Dark green leatherette with embossed design on cover, gilt lettering and design on spine, raised ribs. Green and white endpapers. Gilt edged top pages. 493 pp. Emerson was born in Boston in 1803, went to Harvard, taught school, then became a preacher. He was a friend of Thoreau's. He became the foremost writer and thinker of his time.
