London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1929. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. This is the fifth of six books in Churchill's acclaimed history of the First World War. This volume deals with the postwar years 1918 to 1928. Here is the first edition, first printing, fine in an original dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, retaining sharp corners, a nicely rounded spine and bright spine gilt. Blistering and separation of the cloth is a problem endemic to this particular edition, particularly along the hinges. This one of the very few copies we have seen with absolutely no trace of this flaw. The contents are crisp, clean, bright, and tight. No inscriptions. A two-line Errata is tipped in at p.9. Mild transfer browning to the endpapers confirms that this copy has spent its life jacketed. Only the text block edges testify to some age, showing some age-toning and just a few trivial spots. The dust jacket is toned at the edges and spine. Losses are modest, confined to an irregular .2 inch strip at the spine head, chips to a maximum depth of .25 inch at the spine tail, and chipping to a .25 inch depth near the lower front corner. No date, but published in late 1935 or early 1936, since Wadham's contribution (ending at page 19) is dated 13th November, 1935, and Crossley's "Foreword to Part II" is dated December of the same year. Wadham writes, "These notes have been compiled, more or less in the form of a diary, with a view to placing on record the services of those who voluntarily came forward to serve their country in its hour of need." This copy from the library of 2nd Lt. I. (Irvine) B. Rouse of the battalion, who is listed thrice in the appendices, once in "Additional Nominal Roll of Officers who served with the I/4th Battalion The King's Own Royal Regt.
