Barcelona and Madrid: Biblioteca de Catalunya and Calcografia Nacional, 1989. First and only edition of the catalogue raisonne of the prints of Ismael Smith, an early 20th century artist who was born in Catalonia but ended up living in the United States. Among Smith's favorite subjects were erotic scenes, bullfights, and religious images. 119 items thoroughly described. Well over 100 full-page plates, many in color. 4to. Original wraps. A very scarce edition of this erotic classic, originally published in 1755 and both reprinted and burned several times thereafter. Aix-en-Provence: Andre Adibert, 1787. A bizarre volume which defends a man whose wife, accusing him of impotence, wishes to have their marriage annulled. Rancurel's lawyers argue that he is not absolutely impotent, simply unable to perform with a virgin. Gay-Lemmonyer (III, 754) offers a lengthy account of this volume, describing it as "curieux et tres rare." 8vo. Contemporary quarter leather over decorated boards. Light wear to extremities. Internally fine.

Autrecht (Utrecht) [i.e., Caen?]: Antoine Schouten [i.e., Cavelier?], 1699. Two volumes in one, complete. First edition of this rare and important collection, not to be confused with another book of the same title published in 1663. Barbier (IV, 88) offers a long citation from Nodier (Catalogue Guilbert de Pixerecourt, no. 1639): "Ce petit recueil est tres-connu, mais il merite de l'etre, car il se distingue de toutes les collections du meme genre par le choix des pieces, et aucune autre n'en peut tenir lieu...." Nodier goes on to explain, with convincing argumentation, that this is in fact a personal choice printed by a collector with good taste, and not by a professional publisher. Nicely printed on fine laid paper. 12mo. Beautifully bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt, with Padget (Paget) coat of arms (motto: "Per il suo contrario") embossed on both boards.
