King of the Harem Heaven: (1960; MONARCH Book # MA300). The Amazing True Story of Benjamin Purnell, King of the House of David, a Daring Charlatan Who Ran a Virgin Love Cult in America

By Anthony Sterling (Pseudonym - Real Name Was Never revealed)

Derby, Connecticut, USA.: Monarch Books, Inc., 1960. 159 pages. The Amazing True Story of Benjamin Purnell, ex-Leader of the cult/commune the House of David (colony in Benton Harbor, Michigan in early 1900's); Members to take a vow of celibacy. For a violation of this oath and public immorality, Ben Purnell stood trial in 1927 in Berrian County, Michigan. Thirteen young women confessed to having SEX with the commune/cult leader. In 1960 about 4000 copies of this title sold in the first weeks. The House of David filed a court injunction against Monarch Books for slander & won the case. They took possession of all unsold copies, but bought back and burned as many copies as possible. They bought the future rights, so it could never be published again. Thus, this BANNED TITLE is on of the RAREST books ever published by Monarch Books (or any 1960’s Paperback Publisher) *** Overall VG+ example, but; BACK cover was once damp & thus there is some paper-pull spots in a confined 2" x 2" area affecting some of the BACK cover text, thus VERY GOOD Minus (still a nice example) . PBO (Paperback Original) True First Ed.. Soft Cover. VERY GOOD Minus. Illus. by Robert { Bob } Maguire GGA Good Girl Art Painted Cover!. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" Tall.. Mass Market Paperback.
