Description:
United Kingdom: c1786. Miniature portrait of Charles Cornwallis, British soldier and statesman, who is "probably best known for his defeat at Yorktown, Virginia, in the last important campaign (September 28–October 19, 1781) of the American Revolution. Cornwallis was possibly the most capable British general in that war, but he was more important for his achievements as British governor-general of India (1786–93, 1805) and viceroy of Ireland (1798–1801). A veteran of the Seven Years’ War (1756–63)—during which (1762) he succeeded to his father’s earldom and other titles—Cornwallis, who had opposed the British policies that antagonized the North American colonists, nonetheless fought to suppress the American Revolution. Late in 1776 he drove General George Washington’s patriot forces out of New Jersey, but early in 1777 Washington recaptured part of that state. As British commander in the South from June 1780, Cornwallis won a great victory over General Horatio Gates at Camden,…

Description:
Toronto: L.K.Cameron, 1909. First Edition. Jones’s 1906 map of Huronia shows the various Huron settlements in the area of Simcoe County, as they existed in the first half of the sixteenth century before the Huron population was basically annihilated by the Iroquois. It is based on documentary evidence as well as topographical investigation and a careful personal inspection of the principal sites. Part I of the text is concerned with the identification of the various village sites with a section on the derivation of the Huron place-names while Part II is a chronological record of the Huron missions and missionaries’ arrivals and departures year by year from 1616 to 1650. Among the illustrations are a number of reproductions of watercolour sketches made by Father F.Martin who visited the region in 1855. “A definitive study.” (Story p. 372). 8vo. pp. xxxii, 505. numerous maps & illus. (some colour) & 2 large folding maps at end. biblio. index. A very nice copy in original cloth. elala5924

New York: Printed For Jones & Co. of Montreal, 1836. 12mo. pp. 11, 131. original patterned cloth (some chipping to extremities & spine label, some foxing). First Edition. Pointing out the manifest absurdities, contradictions and falsehoods of the Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk (1836), including sworn documentary evidence and a biographical sketch of Maria Monk. Maria Monks narrative is one of the most famous examples of nineteenth century American anti-Catholic propaganda. The mysterious Maria Monk found ready help and encouragement in the publication of her charges by men associated with the American nativist movement, the Rev. George Bourne and the Rev. W.C.Brownlee. Within a few years of the appearance of her slanderous and scandalous disclosures of the wicked activities engaged in at the Hotel Dieu nunnery in Montreal (from where, she claimed to have just escaped), Maria Monk had slipped back into obscurity. She died on Welfare Island where she was imprisoned on charges of petty…

He played an active role in the affairs of the province and wrote several pamphlets on the legal and political administration of Quebec. "Known as the Quebec Papers, [An Account Of The Proceedings] is perhaps the most important of all Maseres' contributions to Canadian history, and contains original material pertaining to early British rule in Canada." (Lande) Included here are the text of the Quebec Act of 1774, as well as the numerous petitions and addresses to the British Ministry from both the French Catholic and English Protestant inhabitants of the Province prior to and following its enactment. Maseres became a spokesman in England for the English-speaking merchants in Quebec who wished to secure the repeal of the Quebec Act. (Sir John Dalrymple), and printed at the public expense, to be distributed in America, where the greatest part of a large impression has been sent apparently to co-operate with a late conciliatory resolution of the House of Commons. It is replete with expressions of tender affection for the inhabitants of the colonies, and paints the measures and intentions of government toward them in the softest and most pleasant colours.
