Moscow: Selkolkhozgiz, 1931. 142 pp. 22,2x14,7 cm. Original illustrated wrappers. Fine condition. The architecture of the book by "Brigade #1 For Mass Book Production". No copies in Worldcat. The polygraphic masterpiece by the unsung hero of Soviet book constructivism, Elbrus Gutnov (1906-1981), and his "Brigade #1 For Mass Book Production". The self-taught Ossetia artist, he was always in the shadow of Solomon Telingator, but he was indeed one of the most consistent practitioners of the ideas of polygraphic constructivism established by Alexei Gan and El Lissitskiy. As a young man Vladikavkaz, where he was painting for the local Red Army unit, Gutnov was noticed by Sergo Ordzhenikidze. Under Sergo's protection, and with the approval of Stalin and Lunacharsky, Gutnov traveled to Germany to study. He enrolled in the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts (Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst) in Berlin, where he studied in the polygraphic department. According to his… Read More

Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, 1930. 200 pp.: ill. 20x14 cm. In original constructivist wrappers. Spine chipped, creases and tears of cover edges, with minor fragments of edges lost, some foxing occasionally, stamp of private library on t.p., otherwise very good. One of 5000 copies. Foreword written by Hungarian Communist revolutionary Béla Kun, executed in Moscow in 1938. Cover design was created by Solomon Telingater. According to a caption, the back cover "shows that world pushball play where social-democrats spend all their energy to prevent the capitalist ball from falling. Thomas, Vandervelde, MacDonald are playing. Rockefeller, Morgan, Mond are on their shoulders. Papa Pius is blessing the game while the army and police are guarding the shaky balance of the capitalist cylinder hat". The internal design, most likely, was also made by Telingater. The book contains two dozens of portraits of 'class enemies', partly produced in the photomontage technique. Some of them were made with… Read More

Description:
Moscow: Gosmedizdat, 1930. 8 pp. 17x13 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Near fine. Very rare. This tiny brochure from the series 'The Health of Kolkhoznik' is dedicated to the explanation of the purpose of nurseries and why they are good for the parents. The collectivization of its agricultural sector in USSR started in 1928, so this brochure was supposed to reach newly made kolkhoz and sovkhoz. The most interesting thing is that the book explains basic simple things, e.g. children of different ages need different care, and in the nursery there are medical personnel and educators who understand this and can provide needed care. It is also interesting to note unusual practices specific for kolkhoz: children were examined after arrival, changed into clean clothes, and personal clothes were put into a bag. Another goal of this edition was to educate the mother - nursery was a sort of a school for young mother where she could learn while watching personnel how to properly handle children in terms… Read More

Very good, small losses and soiling of the covers, Soviet bookshops' stamps on the back endpapers. First and only edition. One of 5000 copies. Very rare. Volume 6 from the series 'Encyclopedia of a Builder', with 154 illustrations in the text. The 1920s was the era of building Soviet world from scratch as well as literal building and constructing. New cities and towns were in need of builders and architects so such textbooks or even 'encyclopedias' were in a high demand: "Pre-revolutionary technical literature on construction was sold out or morally old, and a new one - very poor because only starting in 1924 the construction process was being regenerated". This edition was directed to engineers and everyone involved in construction. In this particular volume attention is drawn towards architecture forms of buildings in general and separately - cornice, buttresses, pilasters,… Read More

The classic example of the photo-book created by one of the pioneers of the Soviet photomontage, Malevich's student and Klutsis' right hand, Sergei Sen'kin (1894-1963). Sen'kin has been an important link between suprematism and constructivism: he has worked with Malevich and Lissitsky in Vitebsk and was a member of UNOVIS in 1921, but by 1923 he has became one of the active members of the Left Front of Arts in Moscow, collaborating with Rodchenko, Mayakovsky and Stepanova. All of this time he has worked with Gustav Klutsis, creating posters and book designs together.
