Jonathan Dickinson (1688-1747) was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts, and attended one of the earliest classes at Yale College, graduating in 1706. While there are not a lot of details of his early life, he did end up preaching to a group of New England Congregationalists in 1708 in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey. Although he accepted a blend of Puritan Calvinism theology, he was flexible enough to also accept "more contemporary experiences of evangelical revivalism." He advocated a 'lively faith', but took account of a person's age and intellectual development. Thomas Foxcroft (1697-1769)… Read More

San Francisco: Thomas Houseworth & Co, 1870. Single stereocard, 3½ x 7 inches. Stereo image mounted onto printed orange cardstock. Slight wear at edges. Very good. Single stereocard, 3½ x 7 inches. Massive Transcontinental Railroad Bridge. A very attractive single stereocard image of the Central Pacific Railroad's "Long Ravine Trestle Bridge." The bridge is located in Nevada County, California, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, just west of the Nevada state line. The image comes from a set sixty-two stereocards created by Thomas Houseworth & Company for the railroad some time after the railroads completion, in 1869. According to the website of the Central Pacific Railroad (www.cprr.org), the Houseworth company produced more than one hundred such stereocards for the railroad, including more than a dozen views of the 878-foot long Trestle Bridge. A nice early stereoscopic image of an engineering wonder from an important American railroad.

Description:
1829. Signed Aug. Edouart fecit and dated 1829 lower left. 11 x 7-1/4 inches. Matted. Signed Aug. Edouart fecit and dated 1829 lower left. 11 x 7-1/4 inches. Augustin Amant Edouart was a French-born portrait artist who began making silhoutte portraits in London in 1825. In 1829 he moved to Edinburgh, where he worked for three years before traveling in the United States and then moving back to France. Edouart's silhouttes, cut out from black paper by hand, are held by collections such as the National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Galleries of Scotland, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His work has been included in several leading exhibitions on silhouettes as an art form. This fine example of Edouart's work shows a man in a top hat carrying a thin straight cane, followed by a small dog with short legs. The workmanship gives a sense of motion, and the glint of white at the man's collar is striking in an otherwise near-solid figure. Provenance: Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York
