Encyclopedic in scope and handsomely executed, with American as well as British material. "Kemp was a central and extremely influential figure in yachting and yacht designing. His work is of great importance. In this volume he discusses displacement, buoyancy, proportions, steam engines, rigs, designing, building etc., and analyses forms of existing yachts." See Toy 4762. London: Henry Colburn, 1849. viii, 432 pp. b/e frontispiece. The author and his friend, "Lord R(odney)", take a cruise in the R.Y.S. cutter "Iris." They engage in more socializing and sightseeing than yachting, but this account is early and scarce. "Iris sailed from Greenwich to Christiansand, Elsinore, Copenhagen, Falkenborg, Gotteborg, Christiana, Fredrecksvaern, Larvig, Boom, Gron Fjord, Bergen, Scarborough, Yarmouth Roads, and back to Greenwich." Toy 937. Whew! This is the second edition of a book first published the year before. Bound in blindstamped and gilt red cloth, all edges gilt. Recto of frontispiece is stained, covers are lightly rubbed and faded. Still a very good copy.

London: Henry S. King and Co., 1875. (13), 221 pp. Sepia toned photo plates. A witty and informative look at the South Seas, and cruising as it was practiced in the Victorian era. Wood stopped at Rotuma, the Fijis, the Solomons and the Carolines, among other places. Toy notes that he was a stout champion of the natives and opposed to the destruction of their way of life by missionaries, traders, blackbirders and other agents of so-called civilization. Toy - 693. Illustrated with 6 autotype photos. This is a fine copy in original decorated binding with text and plates in excellent condition. Unusual thus.

n.p: Southern Railway Company, 1932. A charming illustrated guide to the "Ports and Yachting haunts served by the Southern Railway." Each of these "haunts" is represented by a yachting club, and each club and location gets its own chapter, headed by a color image of that club's pennant. Pears signs himself "R.O.I." (Royal Institute of Oil Painters) and this pretty work is made prettier by 16 full-page color reproductions of his yachting scenes. See Toy 2087, who notes, "Contains an alphabetical list of yachting and sailing clubs" (along with their club pennants). Light cover wear, very good condition.. 23.5 cm. "Yachts and Yachting" is a history of American yachting from the early days of the New York Yacht Club; the Mayflower and Galatea races of 1886; American steam yachting in the 19th century; and British yachting during the same period. This is the rare limited Edition de luxe, being #238 of 250 copies, and uncommonly hard to find. It has an additional 40 pages on the yachting seasons of 1886 and 1887, with Cozzens's distinctive line illustrations throughout. See Toy 77 (citing the British edition). Morris & Howland p. 35. Backstrip sunned and worn at spine ends. Corners bumped. The lower portion of the front cover is water stained, but the distinctive cover design is intact. Very good condition internally. 4to, 31 cm. ii, (1), 11-200 pp. b/w halftone plates and line ills.

New York: International Yacht Publishing Co, (1894). First and only edition of one of the scarcest and most desirable yachting books. Prized especially for its 98 toned photogravure plates of yachts by Frederiksen, Bruce, Bolles, Stebbins, and Johnson, this is a source book for American yachting up to the turn of the century. "Histories of individual American yacht clubs, drawings of important or typical yachts, photographs and brief biographies of American yachtsmen... For each club data is provided on members, boats, regattas and rules." Toy 102. Morris & Howland p. 97. Because of its massive format, the book is usually found in broken bindings, when it can be found at all. This copy is complete. The title page to volume I is tanned and has some repaired chips along its outer edge. Two other prelims have short tears repaired. The rest of the book is in excellent condition. Solidly rebound in tan buckram with gold spine lettering. . 35 cm. 692 pp. b/w gravure plates, line ills, halftones.

No matter where it was published, it remains one of the key books on American whaling, and is still the best general source of whaling know-how, with Ashleys inimitable illustrations and much technical information on whaleships and whaling, as well as scrimshaw. Forster 160. Bound in publisher's decorated cloth over boards, top edge gilt. A fine, brilliant copy in illustrated dust jacket, which differs from the American jacket. Jacket is lightly chipped at spine ends and the backstrip shows some tanning. Housed in custom slipcase. . 21 x 28 cm. xxiv, (2), 379 pp. b/w and color plates.
