This copy has been SIGNED by the author and INSCRIBED to minor poet and folklorist Addison Barker with the complete eight-line poem "The Pasture," the first poem in the book, in the poet's hand on the page opposite the title page. The recipient's signature is on the front endpaper above a pasted newspaper photograph of Frost, and Barker has noted on the title page the date Frost wrote the poem in the book: 25 January 1950. Barker has an interesting connection to Frost in that in 1951 he published the discovery of the very first appearance in print (BLUM'S FARMER'S AND PLANTER'S ALMANAC FOR 1850) of the proverb "Good fences make good neighbors." Bound in contemporary full polished calf with matching marbled end papers and all edges. Spine decorated and lettered in gilt, with six compartments, the second and fifth with contrasting red and sepia title labels respectively, the third with oval black volume number label, all other compartmens with various gilt motifs and decoration. Stitched in original stiff card with marbled wrappers. Printed title label in a ruled border pasted to front cover. Finely printed on laid-paper with deckle edge, 4pp. (title page, 2 page poem, 1 blanc page). Alan Anderson, owner of the Tragara Press, was impressed with a short story by Ted Hughes and asked if he had anything else that he could print. Hughes suggested to print a poem by his wife, Sylvia Plath. Anderson printed around 60 copies of 'A Winter Ship'. Plath requested the removal of her name from the title, writing in June of 1960: "We thought we'd like the date, place and press in upright letters, as on the other proof, and my name deleted - as I'll write that on the inside myself, with Christmas greeting too.
