Archie Shepp, in his forward to a later edition remarked that: ".he has created convincing, moving episodes about people who happen in the main to be of color, and he seems to know them all intrinsically.Holmes has done a great service to the music, by lifting it from the ranks of stereotyped literary criticism to a subject of truly heroic proportions".
