New York: Random House, 1947 Excellent Presentation Copy. First Edition. 8vo., 343pp. A very good or better copy showing light use in a near fine dust jacket. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper to Hall of Fame sportswriter Jimmy Cannon dated in the year of publication: "For Jimmy, / who takes a game / with athletes and makes a world / with people / With admiration and warm / regards / Budd / July 15 1947". An explosive novel exposing the fight world's manipulation of prizefighters by their managers & racketeers. Basis for the critical 1956 Mark Robson directed film noir starring Rod Steiger, Max Baer, Sr. & Humphrey Bogart in his strong final role. An excellent unique Association Copy linking Schulberg & Cannon; two of America's greatest [sports] writers - both listed in the International Boxing Hall Of Fame. Schulberg is the only non-boxer honored as a "Living Legend of Boxing" by the World Boxing Association.. 1st Edition.

New York: Random House, 1947. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Stated first printing of the great boxing novel by the author of What Makes Sammy Run? Paper a bit age toned else this is a solid clean very good copy in lightly frayed dustwrapper with original $3.00 price to the dustwrapper flap. A couple of small stains to rear panel. Nicely INSCRIBED by the author on the title page. Also, laid into this copy is a small booklet which announces the memorial service for Schulberg which took place at the New York Society for Ethical Culture on September 12, 2009 and featured such emminent speakers and artists as Bill Gallo, Ivan Dee, Gene Kilroy, Nick Beck, Quincy Troupe and Jon Faddis among others. Source for the film of the same name.
