Contemporary sheep-backed marbled paper-covered boards with vellum tips (spine very worn) French Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire and an avid traveler and lover of antiquities, Choiseul-Gouffier first published his impressions of Greece and the Ottoman Empire as Voyage Pittoresque en Grece in 1782. In 1842, the work was posthumously republished as Voyage pittoresque dans l'Empire Ottoman. This second edition quite rare, with only the Atabey copy (selling for £14,000 in 2002) and one other in the auction records. Atabey 242. This edition not in Blackmer. (19 1/4 x 13 inches). Titles to both parts illustrated with vignettes. Part 1: portrait, 2 (of 4) maps, 12 unnumbered plates of headpieces, plates numbered 1-126 on 100 leaves. Lacks 2 maps. Part 2: 2 unnumbered plates of headpieces, plates numbered 1-17, 19-69 and 71-159 (plus 33b, 33t, 67b, 67t and 76b) on 70 leaves. Lacks plates 18 and 70. (Part 1 title badly creased, various degrees of dampstaining, foxing and browning, several plates with old repairs).
