New York: The Macmillan Company, 1904. First trade edition. 113pp. Binding is lightly faded on spine, with moderate wear at tips of spine, slightly bumped at tips of corners, else a very good copy. First trade edition. 113pp. FEMINIST GERTRUDE ROBINSON-SMITH'S COPY. Feminist Gertrude Robinson-Smith's copy, with her attractive, early pictorial bookplate on front pastedown. Born in New York City in 1880, to a wealthy family, she worked for numerous causes, was President of the Vaccination Society, raised funds for refugees during World War I, had a summer home in the Berkshires, and helped found the first Berkshire Music Festival, in 1934, which eventually became Tanglewood. She died in 1963.
This First American edition precedes the British, and is only preceded itself by a September 1903 off-print of 12 copies produced for copyright purposes. Wade 52
