About This Item

Hartford, Conn.: L. Stebbins, 1865. 1st Edition . Hardcover. See Description. 8vo. (191 mm), pp. viii, [1], 12-400. With 12 illustrations including what is apparently an extra frontispiece titled "capturing the responsible party in the treatment of Union prisoners" which is not mentioned in the list of illustrations. The "certificates" leaf is present in the front. Bound in publisher's brown cloth with gilt decoration. Binding is sturdy but well-worn on the extremities - e.g., board corner tips are bumped and frayed; the outer portion of the tail cap is worn/lacking; gilt decoration is dulled. Interior pages display moderate to heavier scattered foxing and spotting. Plates are uniformly well foxed/tanned. Periodic upper corner creases are present throughout; more pronounced upper corner creases are found on p. 151. Pages also contain occasional minor tears, chipping and wear. A tear is neatly sealed in the upper margin of p. 109; a small hole at the end of the tear is located next to the running title. The lower inner margins of pp. 263-270 (including a plate) contain a narrow track of worming (?) - 2 cm x 2 mm - not affecting text or image. Page 65 shows a light shadow from a pressed leaf. A name is penciled on the front pastedown. Decent reading copy. [Sabin 37300 (Vol. 9, p. 424)].
