From the publisher

The report has results for urban areas - towns, cities and major agglomerations - in the North on all topics covered by the 2001 Census in England and Wales. Urban areas range in size from 1,500 people to the largest agglomerations. There are approximately 25 Key Statistics tables and each table is designed to summarise detailed information relating to a single topic such as, Industry of employment and Living arrangements. This publication is part of a series of four regional volumes and follows the publication of the report on urban areas in England and Wales. This report includes reference maps showing all urban areas and sub-divisions for the North. Results for urban areas meet a widespread interest in information about towns and cities, and for comparison between urban populations and with those living outside towns. The Key Statistics series is designed for quick reference and comparison but also to provide information for studies in greater depth. The regional parts follow the same format as the report for England and Wales, but cover every settlement recognised as an urban area in each broad region. They also include Key Statistics for all sub-divisions created to reflect distinct localities within built up areas. Key Findings: The North of England has the urban area with the highest proportion of married adults in England and Wales - Pannal, South of Harrogate, where 72 per cent of people aged 16 and over are married. In the North of England 92.9 per cent of the population live in urban settlements. There are 455 such areas in the North containing 13,200,000 people. More than half of households in Higher Folds has no access to a car or van - the highest proportion among all urban areas in England and Wales. It is the only urban area to have an average of less than 0.6 cars per household.
