As a young man during World War II, Karol Wojtyla and his associates formed the Rhapsodic Theatre in Krakow, Poland. They wrote and performed their plays underground as a protest against Nazi destruction of Polish culture. They defined their work as "theater of the inner self".
Written in 1944, Our God's Brother is a powerful example of such theater. It portrays the explosive inner struggles of a famous artist/freedom fighter over how he can best serve Christ in the poor and homeless. Wojtyla, the young playwright, tells the interior story of Adam Chimielowski, the 19th Century Polish artist. As Pope John Paul II in 1983, Wojtyla would beatify Chimielowski as the apostle of the poor and homeless.
