Born in 1927 tells of his schooling along with twin brother David. He was a city councilor from 1959, Sir Hamish became Christchurch's mayor in 1974 and won five terms in office before stepping down in 1989.He was knighted in 1982. The book tells of the controversies over city development like QEII Park, the Town Hall, airport extensions, the new public library, and the hosting of the 10th Commonwealth games. A keen supporter of the arts, Sir Hamish was a driving force in the building of Christchurch Town Hall. The Sir James Hay Theatre there is named after his father, who was also a city councilor.
