The avocado (Persea americana Mill,) is a polymorphic tree species that apparently originated in a broad geographical area stretching from the eastern and central highlands of Mexico through Guatemala to the Pacific coast of Central America (Popenoe, 1920; Smith, 1966, 1969; Storey et al., 1986).
