The prevalence of these themes illustrates the vital role played by Northern Protestant ministers in immortalizing Lincoln, formulating harsh Reconstruction policies toward the South, and promoting the postwar conservatism whereby institutionalism, nationalism, and conformity replaced civil disobedience and nonconformity.
