Picavet on the in?uence of England upon Marshal Turenne, followed by an interesting discussion. Since the author's recent and lamented death the manu script has not been found. Otherwise all the papers in the modern sections are given, though some have been since modified by the authors in View of the discussions, or in the light of fresh material. In preparing them for the press I have owed_much to the ripe judgment of M. Coville and to the indefatigable zeal 'of M. Renouvin in providing translations from the French. I do not W1sh to avoid the responsibility of editing, but I feel that they are entitled to the major share of any credit which the volume may gain among either scholars or general readers.
