From the publisher

In the 1920s and mid 1930s, the great Russian Opera singer Feodor Chaliapin was considered by music critics and opera fans to be the greatest Opera star of the world. This book is a meticulously documented story of Chaliapin's performances and sojourns in North America. It is the first book of its kind about Chaliapin, written in English by an American scholar of Russian descent. It offers a thorough description of opera performances, concerts and recitals, as well as some political and social events associated with the name Chaliapin during his many years of performing in North America. The main purpose of this book is to reveal the forgotten and unknown pages of Chaliapin's life and to give a truthful historical depiction of those occurrences.
