English summary: The king is dead, long live the king. This statement, which suggested above all political stability, could no longer be used by contemporaries of the 20th Century. The Herold formula, last used in in 1824, sought to defuse the dramatic death of the ruler through the fact that the crown, and thus the power, was seamlessly moved from the late monarch to the new one determined to be the successor. This seamlessness could barely hold true during the 20th Century. The age of extremes was marked by various political disruptions and upheavals.
