Pensees

By Pascal, Blaise

'If we submit everything to reason our religion will be left with nothing mysterious or supernatural’

Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The Penseés is a collection of philosophical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in psychological, social, metaphysical and—above all—theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal’s analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God’s grace.

This masterly translation conveys Pascal’s disarmingly personal tone and captures all the fire and passion of the original. Also contained in this volume are a comparison between different editions, appendices and a bibliography.

Pensees

Blaise Pascal

Paris - Andrieux, 1844 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractively bound edition of Pascals major philosophical and theological work, here in two volumes. Blaise Pascal was a 17th century French polymath: he was variously a mathematician, inventor, writer, philosopher, and physicist. He was one of the first two inventors of a mechanical calculator, and had written incisively about projective geometry by the age of 16, establishing it as an area of research. He also helped influence the modern study of economics in his correspondence with Fermat on probability theory. He began writing works of philosophy and theology in 1654, following a religious experience. He died at the age of 39. The name Pensees was given posthumously to the fragments of Pascal's incomplete apologia for Christianity. It is upon these notes and essays that his philosophical reputation is founded. The work is the source of 'Pascal's Wager', a famous philosophical argument for belief in God, and is a key text in the history of European theological and philosophical thought. Includes a facsimile of the author's handwriting to the rear of volume 1. This copy is from an institutional library, and contains plates and stamps to that effect. Condition: In half calf. Externally with some shelf wear, particularly marking to the boards, rubbing to the extremities and spine, and mildfading to the spine. Nonetheless the spines have retained an attractive patina. With a library plate to the front pastedowns and to the front free endpapers. With a contemporary ink inscription to the frontispiece. With light foxing to the first and last few pages of each volume as usual, and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Pensees

Blaise Pascal

Paris - Garnier Freres, 1930 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. A twentieth century edition of Blaise Pascal's most influential theological work. In the original French. With the bookplate of one Jos Warndorff to the recto of the front endpaper. This work is a collection of fragments on theology and philosophy written in the 17th century by the famous philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal. The Pensees was not completed before Pascal's death and was first published posthumously. It is considered to be a masterpiece and a landmark in French prose. Pascal studies several philosophical paradoxes to this work such as infinity and nothing, faith and reason, soul and matter, life and death as well as several more. As the work was not complete at its time of publishing it consists of ideas and jottings. However, it is believed that prior to his death Pascal had already arranged the order in which he wanted this work. Condition: In a quarter calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to the extremities and joints. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of front endpaper, Jos Warndorff. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned as expected from paper used. Generally clean throughout. Overall: NEAR FINE..
