The Feminine Mystique.

Friedan, Betty

New York: W. W. Norton, 1963. First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Gus- A very gay and "untimid" program- Betty Friedan Feb. 4, 1963." The publication date of The Feminine Mystique was February 19, 1963, this copy was signed two weeks prior. Fine in an excellent dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The Feminine Mystique begins with an introduction describing what Friedan called "the problem that has no name"—the widespread unhappiness of women in the 1950s and early 1960s. It discusses the lives of several housewives from around the United States who were unhappy despite living in material comfort and being happily married with fine children. "[The Feminine Mystique] now feels both revolutionary and utterly contemporary. Four decades later, millions of individual transformations later, there is still so much to learn from this book. Those who think of it as solely a feminist manifesto ought to revisit its pages to get a sense of the magnitude of the research and reporting Friedan undertook" (Anna Quindlen). Named by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 best and most influential non-fiction books since 1923.

From Wikipedia: "The Feminine Mystique, published 19 February 1963 is a book written by Betty Friedan, published by W.W. Norton and company which brought to light the lack of fulfillment in many women's lives, which was generally kept hidden. According to The New York Times obituary of Friedan in 2006, it 'ignited the contemporary women's movement in 1963 and as a result permanently transformed the social fabric of the United States and countries around the world' and 'is widely regarded as one of the most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century'. The Feminine Mystique came about after Friedan sent a questionnaire to other women in her 1942 Smith College graduating class. Most women in her class indicated a general unease with their lives. Through her findings, Friedan hypothesized that women are victims of a false belief system that requires them to find identity and meaning in their lives through their husbands and children. Such a system causes women to completely lose their identity in that of their family. Friedan specifically locates this system among post-World War II middle-class suburban communities. She suggests that men returning from war turned to their wives for mothering. At the same time, America's post-war economic boom had led to the development of new technologies that were supposed to make household work less difficult, but that often had the result of making women's work less meaningful and valuable". A great copy of Betty Friedan's seminal feminist manifesto. Scarce when signed by her. A great book.
