You can feel the tightness of NEW.About the book: This isn't so much a history of the Northwestern Pacific as it is the more significant companies that became the NWP. And this history doesn't exist in a vacuum. Shady dealings, politics, court cases, and race riots all have left their mark in this book and it's quite sobering. I think a reader familiar with the building of the Transcontinental Railroad will have a better appreciation of this book (for example, the author assumes you know who the Big Four are from the very outset and later assumes at least a passing familiarity with Celestial and Irish laborers.
