Although it did not pass though subsequent editions, this dictionary has been quite influential. It was one of the sources used by Black when he compiled his dictionary. An online search shows that it is often cited today. Abbott [1830-1890] was the secretary of the New York Code Commission and the principal author of the state's penal code, which was completed in 1864. He also served on a commission created to revise the statutes of the United States from 1870 to 1872.
