Dust jacket in mylar cover. Thomas Stevens (1854-1935) was born in England and came to the United States with his family in 1871. He became the first person to ride a bicycle entirely around the world, leaving San Francisco on a large-wheeled ordinary, or penny-farthing, in April 1884 and arriving in Boston in August of that year. After spending the winter in New York City, he took a steamer to Liverpool, beginning the next leg of his journey from there in May 1885. After many adventures, he reached Yokohama in Dec. 1886 and returned to San Francisco by steamer in Jan. 1887.
