First Edition Identification

Emma was first published in 1816 in three volumes. It was Austen’s fourth published novel, and the last to be published during her lifetime. Emma's first edition was published by John Murray. The cover consists of leather spines and a marbled paper pattern front. The title page stated that the work was ‘By the Author of “Pride & Prejudice” &c. &c.’, and it also included a dedication to the Prince Regent.

Jane Austen (Steventon, 16 de diciembre de 1775 - Winchester, 18 de julio de 1817) fue una destacada novelista britnica que vivi durante el perodo de la Regencia. La irona que emplea para dotar de comicidad a sus novelas hace que Jane Austen sea considerada entre los Clsicos de la novela inglesa, a la vez que su recepcin va, incluso en la actualidad, ms all del inters acadmico, siendo sus obras ledas por un pblico ms amplio. Naci en la rectora de Steventon (Hampshire). Su familia perteneca a la burguesa agraria, contexto del que no sali y en el que sita todas sus obras, siempre en torno al matrimonio de su protagonista. La candidez de las obras de Austen, sin embargo, es meramente aparente, si bien puede interpretarse de varias maneras. Los crculos acadmicos siempre han considerado a Austen como una escritora conservadora, mientras que la crtica feminista ms actual apunta que en su obra puede apreciarse una novelizacin del pensamiento de Mary Wollstonecraft sobre la educacin de la mujer. Ha sido llevada al cine en diferentes ocasiones, algunas veces reproducidas de forma fiel, como el clsico Ms fuerte que el orgullo de 1940 dirigido por Robert Z. Sin embargo la versin ms fiel y perfecta que hasta ahora se ha hecho del libro de Orgullo y prejuicio es la serie que present la BBC protagonizada por Colin Firth y Jenniffer Ehle. El inters que la obra de Jane Austen sigue despertando hoy en da muestra la vigencia de su pensamiento y la influencia que ha tenido en la literatura posterior. Su vida tambin ha sido llevada al cine con la pelcula Becoming Jane en 2007.
