Although Paterson contributed no significant innovations to the compilation of road books, relying on the advances of Norden, Ogilby, and others, he "made improvements in style and presentation and added factual detail—so much so that his name was for many years an indicator of reliability in road books, and was attached to them long after he had stopped compiling them."
