About This Item
N.p.: N.p., 1930. Vintage snapshot of director Max Reinhardt and Luise Rainer, circa 1930s. Stamp of photographer Charles Rhodes on the verso, along with manuscript pencil annotations noting the story behind the photograph, evidently taken as the pair were leaving Cafe La Maze in Los Angeles.
Luise Rainer began acting at 16 under the tutelage of Max Reinhardt, then Austria's leading stage director, soon joining Reinhardt's famed Vienna theatre ensemble. In 1935 Rainer was discovered by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer talent scouts and moved to Hollywood, where she starred in "The Great Ziegfeld" (1936) and "The Good Earth" (1937), winning Academy Awards for both performances. Her early success proved lethal to her career, however, and Rainer left Hollywood in 1938, claiming that her "source [had] dried up" and that she had no way to live up to the expectations of American audiences after winning two Oscars so early on in her career.
4 x 5 inches. Near Fine.
