United States Army, 1863. One sheet of paper backed with an attached second sheet, two horizontal folds, one vertical fold, fragile yet Very Good, sheets separating at folds., light age toning. Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford, a private in Company B, 64th Regiment Infantry, Indiana Volunteers, dated Sept. 30, 1863 at St. Louis, Mo, by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin, handwritten in red ink, "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. Hudson" with more writing below, illegible. Stamped in red ink "paid by Robert Smith St. Louis Oct. 2 1863 Paymaster U.S.A." Also another stamp, faint with just the word Ohio at right side above top fold. Verso bears handwritten "Discharge Certificate of Thomas F. Fulford Late of Co. B, 64th Regt. Indiana Vols. Infantry". Private Fulford went on to live to the age of 68, fathering 8 children. At his death in 1899, his obituary referred to him as "well known old soldier of Washington Township". Major General John McAllister Schofield ( 1831 -1906 ) held major commands during the Civil War, and later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant, and Commanding General of the United States Army. . One Page,Folded. Very Good. 8 1/4" x 10 1/2".

Announcement of the order by President Johnson to end the naval blockade against foreign commerce, except in the ports of Galveston, Lasalle, Brazos de Santiago (Port Isabel) and Brownsville, Texas. "All such offenders will be held and dealt with as pirates." Although Lee had surrendered in April 1865, the Confederate armies in Texas had not surrendered, hence the U. S. naval blockade on Texas ports needed to be maintained.

[[Slavery] [African American] Thomas Taylor. Autograph Letter, Signed. [Columbus, Texas?]: January 7, 1861. Handwritten letter on gray lined paper. 20 x 23 cm. Discoloration and small splits at old folds. Writing is legible.
Mr. Taylor writes to a friend passing on word that "Mr. Shropshire requested me to let you know that he wishes the negro hire settled." Says Mr. Shropshire will be here a few days and mentions he may be in Lagrange today. There is a town named La Grange in Texas and there was a prominent slave and plantation owner named Shropshire in nearby Columbus, Texas. John Samuel Shropshire moved to Texas in 1854 and settled in Columbus, Colorado County. In 1860 Shropshire owned sixty-one slaves and operated a 750-acre plantation. - Handbook of Texas. It was common for slavers to hire out the enslaved persons, as shown in this letter on the eve of the Civil War.
