The well-regarded anthropologist, museum director, supervising archaeologist for the Fort Massac Reconstruction project in Southern Illinois, and author of The Long Walk: A History of Navajo Wars, 1846-68 takes us back to the years 1863-68, the military roundup of the Navajo Indians and the creation of Bosque Redondo near Fort Sumner, New Mexico, a forty-square mile concentration camp where the Navajo lived according to the dictates of an alien people and suffered disease, starvation, and generational trauma.
