An English pamphleteer, farmer and journalist, William Cobbett gained a reputation as a rabble rouser, famed for his political publications aimed at working class readers. He believed that reforming Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm laborers, and he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly. He was also against the Corn Laws, a tax on imported grain and although he was not a Catholic, he became a fiery advocate of Catholic Emancipation in Britain. While supporting these more progressive policies, he was at the same time opposed to abolition. The Appearance of Being Oscar, a collection of quotes by Oscar Wilde, first appeared in 1988; Lily and Hodge and Dr. Johnson first appeared in 1991.

A fine copy and fairly scarce. A parody of Othello, "With burlesque notes in the manner of the most celebrated commentators, and other curious appendices." New York: Mason Brothers, 1853. 192 pages. Illustrated with in-text wood engravings. Binding is embossed brown cloth, with gilt lettering on front cover. Hiram Mattison (1811-1868) was a prominent Methodist minister in New York, who, in addion to his opposition to fraudulent psychics, was an active proponent of temperance and abolition of slavery. In this book he debunks his era's fad of "spirit-rapping" and other practices by which mediums or spiritualists claim to communicate with the dead. As Mattison states in the preface, spirit-rapping "is the grand climax of soothsaying, astrology, witchcraft, phrenology, mesmerism, clairvoyance, Psychology, Fourierism, Millerism, Mormonism, and all other superstitions, delusions, and isms that have ever been, or probably ever will be." Illustrated throughout by Wolo in monochrome and occasionally full color. This is a very good, bright copy with only a trace of wear at edges and corners. The dustwrapper is rubbed at the edges lacks two small pieces, else is in very good condition. It is not price-clipped. With a full page full color dedication on the front blank featuring the animal king. Wolo (Baron Wolff von Falkenstein) was a refugee from Nazi Germany who took up residence in San Francisco where he worked for the Chronicle and developed his superb artistic ability. .

Endpapers partially pasted down, first two pages partially detached, and others reinforced with what appears to be archival tape. A purple War Srvices stamp on the title page, and a longer one on the front free endpaper. Light wear to the spine tips, edges and corners. Still gives a good appearance. Illustrated with eight full page Woodburytype plates. .

A beautifully illustrated facsimile of the famous Library Shakespeare, a complete edition of Shakespeare's plays. Illustrated by Sir John Gilbert, George Cruikshank, and R. Dudley. The facsimile illustrations include many colourplates, numerous fine plates in monochrome, and many engravings throughout the text. A richly illustrated volume. Folio, (12 "x 10"), bound in full black leather, the spine and upper cover richly decorated and printed in red and gilt in all-over designs. All edges gilt, moire silk end-leaves. vi 396; 406, 476 pp. A pristine copy, as mint and unused. A STRIKINGLY HANDSOME EDITION WELL SUITED TO THE IMMORTAL WORDS WITHIN, and this in a binding of black leather gilt decorated. The colourplates are in the finest style of the period and set this edition apart from other library Shakespeare editions of both its time and ours.

Oblong folio. 37 black and white maps and charts showing sections of the propsed and existing sections of the highway through Guatemala to Panama. This is the plate volume only, no text. Printed paper wraps bound with rivets. The item has been folded once vertically with wear and loss to the covers. The maps have age toning but are mostly in very good condition, the vertical crease being more a bend on the maps than a crease. The size is 10 by 15 inches; some maps are larger and are folded at the right edges to fit. Only a good copy, but very scarce.
