About This Item

Seattle: Associated Students of the University of Washington, 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Pp. 436. Index. Illustrated throughout with drawings, some in colors, and black & white photo reproductions, some tipped in. Bound in faux leather ivory cloth with blindstamped design on cover and spine. Color illustrated endpapers. Slight wear to cover with lower edge a trifle darkened, else a bright, fresh copy. Features an artistic rendering of the 1936 Olympics gold-medal winning 1936 University of Washington Crew on a two-page spread with photos of their heads imposed in a comic fashion. They are Herbert Morris, Charles Day, Gordon Adam, John White, James McMillin, George Hunt, Joe Rantz, Donald Hume and Robert Moch. In addition, four pages are devoted to the crew's triumphant 1936 season, with photos of all crew members as well as coaches Al Ulbrickson and Tom Bolles, and George Pocock, the renowned designer and builder of shells and sculls.

Evidence of the Great Depression is noted in the falling off of the usual advertisements for discretionary goods and services. Whereas earlier issues of the Tyee carry ads pitched toward affluent customers (Cadillac, Olympic Hotel, high-end haberdasheries), this year's ads are of a more prosaic quality.
