About This Item

New York: The Vanguard Press (1938, early printing). Hardcover with illustrated black paper boards with red cloth binding. No dust jacket. Front and rear covers show shelf wear; edges show heavy wear; cardboard is exposed at the corners; wear to head and tail of spine. Faint residue from price sticker removal at top right front corner. The illustrations on the front endpapers progress from small hats to large hats (progression reversed on rear endpapers), indicating it's not the 1st printing. Child's period bookplate at bottom of ffep, with child's name in black crayon, with some of the black crayon transferring to the opposite endpaper. Text block is solidly sewn and firmly attached to boards.

Extended Description and Notes

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is a children's book, written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Dr. Seuss and published by Vanguard Press in 1938. Unlike the majority of Geisel's books, it is written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. Geisel, who collected hats, got the idea for the story on a commuter train from New York to New England, while he was sitting behind a businessman wearing a hat; the passenger was so stiff and formal that Geisel idly wondered what would happen if he took the man's hat and threw it out the window. Geisel concluded that the man was so "stuffy" that he would just grow a new one. The characters of Bartholomew and King Derwin returned a decade later in Bartholomew and the Oobleck.

Synopsis

The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins is a children's book, written by Dr. Seuss and published in 1938. Unlike the majority of Dr. Seuss's books, it is written in prose rather than rhyming and metered verse. The characters of Bartholomew and King Derwin appear again in a later book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck. Set in feudal times, the story begins in the Kingdom of Didd, when King Derwin is riding through a street past Bartholomew Cubbins, a poor boy in the market.
