About This Item
London: Collins. Very Good/Very Good. 1951. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo Dust jacket price unclipped. These books are guides to the living Britain, covering the whole country, England,Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each is a guide to a well-defined district, planned to give you the fundamental facts about its scenery, its monuments, its buildings, its natural history, its people and their work and characteristics. The districts are portrayed by well-known authors and specialists, among them W. G. Hoskins, Leo Walmslcy, R. H. Mottram, and Geoffrey Grigson (who is the General Editor). The portraits are married to carefully selected photographs, including some pages in colour. Tours, too, are suggested (and illustrated by road maps, drawings and notes) to enable you to explore each district in a short time by car or bicycle. Each book begins with a coloured title-page by an artist such as Kenneth Rowntree or Barbara Jones, and ends with a detailed gazetteer. A coloured relief map on the cover shows you the district at a glance. Here are 92 pages of lively matter including upwards of 50 illustrations. .
