About This Item
New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1938. First Edition. Some cloth spotting and wear; nearly very good. An excellent, poignant association copy; presented to Frost by the author. Inscribed in pencil, "Signed with all affection and the deepest of respect for Robert Frost on the occasion of a vist to him and his at Gainesville, Florida, March 1938. Hervey Allen." The Frosts moved to Gainesville, where the poet was lecturing at the University of Florida, in December, 1937. Mrs. Frost suffered a heart attack and died on March 20, 1938. Allen rushed up from Miami to console Frost, who was nearly in a state of collapse. Allen's sympathetic presence was gratefully acknowledged by Frost, who sent him a note with long quotations from Tennyson (partly from "In Memorian"), closing with a heartfelt sentiment, "I shall never forget your coming to me with such sympathy." This copy was almost certainly presented to Frost on that memorable visit.
