"Tarascon, a Pittsburgh merchant, had the ingenious plan for building a wagon road across the American continent to the Pacific complete with bridges and ferries. He proposed to call it the Columbian Road: the Indian title to the lands adjacent was to be extinguished and the company was to have the privilege of trading in furs. Washington, 1824. 12pp. Modern half cloth and marbled boards, leather label. Very good. The first proposal for the building of a road to the Pacific Ocean by the federal government. The author advocates the construction of the road to open agricultural land, improve the fur trade, extend the Santa Fe trade, and establish the United States on the Pacific.
