About This Item
(Bulawayo: Books of Rhodesia, 1975) 0869200143. Text facsimile of the Macmillan edition of 1893. Volume Eight in the Rhodesiana Reprint Library Gold Series. 8vo; original dark green boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (viii) + xii + 340 + 8; plates, incl. map. Very good dustwrapper has two short closed tears to top edge and small impression corresponding with point midway along upper joint; bottom edge of boards very slightly shelf-rubbed; earlier owner's name and collector's bookplate to front endpaper; edges a bit foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. "The fever swamps and lion-infested mountain fastnesses which barred the eastern gateway to the Mashonaland of 1891 was no place for refined young ladies, but neither these natural barriers nor the Charter Company's restriction on entry of women deterred Nurses Blennerhassett, Sleeman and Welby from accepting Bishop Knight-Bruce's invitation to set up a mission hospital near Penhalonga. ... The story of the development of their medical services in the face of extreme privation and natural hazards is one of the outstanding tales of Rhodesia's pioneer women and a laudable chapter in the history of nursing in southern Africa." .
