She was an American novelist born in San Francisco in 1857. She was the great-grandniece of Benjamin Franklin, a radical aristocrat, and bestselling author of her day. Dedication reads 'To T. R. Smith My Kind and Scholarly Publisher'; although not indicated, this volume came from the personal collection of T. R. Smith through his granddaughter. Frontispiece portrait from the sketch by Dorothy Donnelly. 598 pages. Jacket fragile with wear & tear, spine darkened, clear wraps added.
