Contents, list of musical examples, list of figures, list of photos, author's preface; Part I ("Out of Africa" - intro plus 10 chaps), Part II ("Return to Africa" - intro and two chaps); summary/conclusions, bibliography, indices (of artists/authors, African ethnic-linguistic terms, and general). Condition notes: this is an ex-library copy with the typical array of stamps and stickers indicating such. Moderate wear to wrappers, light soiling to edges. Interior shows scattered pencil notes/marginalia, else unmarked. "In 1969 [the author] chanced to encounter a Mozambican labor migrant, a miner in Transvaal, South Africa, tapping a cipendani, a mouth-resonated musical bow. A comparable instrument was seen in the hands of a white Appalachian musician who claimed it a part of his own heritage" (from the back cover)...prompting the author to delve into this fascinating topic. Furrowed Brow Books was established in 2020. The bookstore's owner, Paul Purman, grew up in an old farmhouse full of books. Paul had been providing online booksales since 2008 through several popular online sales venues. In 2021 Paul was accepted as a member of the Independent Online Booksellers' Association (IOBA), and graduated from the annual Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS-Minnesota).
