About This Item
Long Beach, California: Safari Press Inc., 1998. Second Printing . Hard Back. Very Good/Very Good. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4. 276 Pages. Yellow boards with black lettering on the spine. There is a small dent to the front board edge as well as very slightly bumped corner at the top. Jacket flap price $35 is unclipped. The inside of the dust jacket front has a light stain associated with moisture exposure. There is a 2 ¼ inch light stain on the top page edges near the spine that caused light page rippling to the first 50 pages. There is no stain on the pages from the moisture exposure and the rippling effect becomes progressively less until it is unnoticeable after the 50th page. This effect is no larger than 2 inches across and 1 ½ inches down. Beyond this flaw the pages are white, tight, and free of any marks. For years ardent fans have known that Frederick Selous wrote many articles in rare periodicals such as The Field as well as being a contributor to the hunting books of other authors. They were never published in book form. Safari Press presents these articles in book form and all the stories in this book relate to the continent that fascinated Selous his entire life -- Africa. Now you can read about Selous's early hunting days in Botswana, his hunts after the lions of the Kalahari, his many hunting trips in Zambezia, his outlook on big-game rifles, his elephant hunting adventures, his views on hippo, his presentation to the Royal Geographic Society concerning his hunts in Southern Africa, and much more. All of the material is annotated by the editor James Casada. In addition, there is a comprehensive bibliography as well as a photo section filled with many previously unpublished photos. Contents in 15 Chapters: Christmas in an African Desert, Incidents of a Hunter's Life in South Africa, Lion Hunting Past and Present, Twenty Years in Zambezia, Hunting in Central Africa The Sportsman's Outfit, African Antelope Heads and Horns, Game Preservation, Big Game in South Africa and Its Relation to the Tsetse Fly, The Romance of the World's Great Rivers The Zambezi, Journeys in the interior of South-Central Africa, Big-Game Rifles, Big-Game Hunting in Africa, The African Elephant, The Lion South and Southeast Africa, and The Hippopotamus.
