In the chapter, Variations from the Major Scale, states the adjustments with the flat seven in the major and major seventh cannot be fully captured in standard musical notation. He noted variations in the throat and what he calls a "curious rhythmic effect" created something extraordinarily unique. There are also two chapters on the black Creole culture. A very nice copy of a musical scholars attempts to capture the uniqueness of the African American sound which whites could not quite master in his observations. A near fine copy bound in blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, spine gilt, previous owner's bookplate, that of collector Noel Sullivan, a concert singer and philanthropist who was also greatly interested in the welfare of Negroes and many became close personal friends.
