About This Item

"Afternoon of an Author" - A Selection of Uncollected Stories and Essays by F. SCOTT FITZGERALD with its original dust jacket. 1957; Charles Scribner's Sons; New York. There are 18 works in all - please see the photos for the complete list.

From the dust jacket: "Afternoon of an Author contains fourteen uncollected short stories and six uncollected essays, evenly distributed over the course of his writing career, beginning with the autobiographical essay called 'Who's Who - and Why,' which he wrote for The Saturday Evening Post in 1920, and ending with 'News of Paris - Fifteen Years Ago,' a story found among Fitzgerald's papers, apparently written in 1940, and posthumously published in Furioso. The book includes, from the early period of Fitzgerald's career, the wry essays about his financial difficulties called 'How to Live on $36,000 a Year' and 'How to Live on Practically Nothing a Year,' and the penetrating essay he wrote in 1926 about Hemingway's In Our Time."

From the Introduction by Arthur Mizener: "The main purpose of these selections is to illustrate both the persistence of Fitzgerald's fundamental sense of experience and the way his uses of it varied as he matured in feeling and as his circumstances changed in time. I have tried to include in this book only pieces which will serve its main purpose, to show the character of Fitzgerald's fundamental perception. Some of them are more obviously personal than others, but all of them derive their energy from some actual experience in which Fitzgerald was deeply involved."

Condition:
There are two tiny, white stain spot at the top and bottom edge of the right side of the front cover; sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean and appear unread with no issues found. There is a very faint outline of the dust jacket flap on the front and rear pastedowns. Overall the book is in Very Good+ condition. The dust jacket has pieces missing at the top edge of the spine, and at the top of the flap corners; the price has been clipped from the front flap; small tears along the perimeter; the letter "E" in the word "Essays" on the front cover has blue pen over it...overall the dust jacket is in Good condition. (The jacket comes with a clear protective sleeve - not shown.)
