About This Item

New York: AMS Press / Extra Vol. 4, 1974. Reprint of 1922 Edition. Cloth. Fine/None. 8vo, dark green cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front cover, 368 pages + folding map. The Soma Sacrifice in ancient India involved an unidentified plant the juice of which was a fundamental offering of the Vedic sacrifices. Indra and Agni drank the potion. One theory as to the Soma plant's identity was made by Gordon Wasson, who argued that it was the Amanita muscaria hallucinogenic mushroom. Soma was plant, drink, and its deity.

An important ancient Indian text from the Rig Veda.

As new reprint.
