First edition, first printing, 1865, softcover pamphlet in good condition. 30 pages plus blank plus wraps. In original paper wraps. No writing inside or out. Edges are chipped, ink stain upper outer edge not affecting text, pages are toned, corners bumped. Author put together this pamphlet to encourage the public to encourage the Union Navy to consider his designs for a warship. Scarce. None listed for sale; none found at auction. 1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. 1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Notes: although classified as fiction what the author is doing is relating facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to youth. Includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - so maybe this book is not 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe.
