Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Carey; Carey & Lea, 1825-1833. First Edition. Hardcover. Folios, four volumes. In Good plus condition. Bound in early half red morocco and marbled boards. Spines with gilt rules, ornaments, and lettering. All volumes with moderate rubbing, scraping, and shelfwear, particularly to corners, heads and tails of spines, and hinges. Volume 1 in Fair condition, with half of signatures and plates loose from binding, but all present. Mild to heavy foxing through all volumes, ranging from non-existent to detrimental. Illustrated with all 27 hand-colored engraved plates by Alexander Lawson after Titian R. Peale, A. Rider, and 1 after J.J. Audubon. Plates generally bright and clean. Some offsetting where tissue-guards have folded or moved. First Edition, Second Issue of volume one, with the Carey, Lea & Carey imprint. Shelved in Case 4. An update to Alexander Wilson's 'Ornithology or History of the Birds of the United States' that includes 60 birds as a supplement. Bonaparte includes the Wild Turkey, the Burrowing Owl, and the Zenaida Dove, named after his wife Princess Zénaïde Bonaparte.
